Allowme to introduce myself - I have been a professor in one of the elite colleges in Madras and after retirement was a Development Consultantfor both National and International organizations. I have reached the biblical age of three scores and ten on the day your article was published.

Your article 'When callousness rules' (NIE 25thAug) was partly good and did expose the callousness that we in India have to live with day in and day out but unlike the NRIs whom you mentioned, cannot leave this land of callousness because this is the only land we have and the only home we have. Your examples of this callousness from the peeing on the road to 'the soulless class which has no time for sovereignty, democracy, secularism, stability, poverty alleviation" , did echo what the ordinary citizen like me agonizes about.

But when it came to terrorism your bias surfaced. The moment police and the investigation agencies try to do their jobs the media and journalists bring out 'the other side of terror'. Is it possible for the police to straight away walk and with one look pick up the culprits? Is there any country in the world, which is as soft toterrorists than India? Even the Islamic countries there is hardly any investigation - a terrorist is simply done away with. Even hardcore terrorists have not been brought to justice in India. Thanks to the politicians' vote bank mentality. It is true that in the processinnocent people will be put to hardships. But how will one eliminatethe innocent without going through the procedures of investigation ofthe suspects, which will have both the innocent and the culprits?

The Muslim community is well knit and they live in aggregate communities. The community usually closes up and walls all investigation.

Tell me Ms Seema how will you react if across the country thousands of temples gave a call to the Hindus to congregate at a particular area. But this is exactly what happened in Kashmir when a call given was bymore than a thousand mosques in Kashmir through the public address system (which is meant to proclaim the prayers) to congregate on the roads in a specific place for rallies to shout anti-Indian slogans. And pro-Pakistan slogans holding Pakistan flags. Only this country will see such scenes of betrayal by its own people. So in the whole frame - work of callousness you did not mention the treason and the betrayal of this nation.

Your article appeared on the 25th Aug and just the previous day a revered Swamiji Laksmnananda Saraswathi and his five disciples were brutally murdered in Orissa. Had they belonged to the minority community the media would have splashed the news across its front pages and the electronic media would have imaged it poignantly atthe prime time as these did when a Christian nun was alleged burned bythe VHP in Bargha in Orissa, but as you rightly stated the " dilution of journalistic ethics", operated to allowed the latter incident to be blurred and passed over as just another one of those killing to be forgotten.

Was it sheer callousness and 'dilution of journalistic ethics which allowed theethnic cleansing in Kashmir to be systematically carried out with the nation and its impotent government to be just silent spectators? And look at how even you as a journalist has rushed to the defense of Shabana Azmi. With her stature and her financial power she is finding it impossible to get a house. Is she then living on the streets ofMumbai?

Why is it that when all the Muslim actors can possess posh bungalows only Shabana Azmi finds it impossible to buy a house. And you fault that no government official has tried to find out thereason and no remedial action was taken - this another example of the 'callousness' ; which you cited in your article? What about the lakhs who are sleeping by the roadside and a few who get mowed by thereckless driving of powerful persons? Should we not cite the community of the victims and the reckless drivers? That will be news. What about those who have no shelter above their heads for generations - should the government not find out the reason and take remedial action? How deftly you have come to the defense of Shaban Azmi and even accused the communal forces demanding an apology from her. This reveals your own biased mindset.

Please bear with me if I narrate to you my own experience. I have lived for 50 years in Chennai -Mahalingapuram - It was a predominately a Brahmin locality (I am a Catholic). The area today has a large number of Muslim families who have bought the houses - some have constructed flats; this was possible because the owners did not look into the religion of the buyers. But now not a single Muslim will rent out his flat/house to a non-Muslim. One Muslim who owns 12 flats when I approached for my niece told me point blank "we take only our people as tenants". The media usually brings out how the Muslims are denied houses- employment by non-Muslims. My experience is just the opposite. Why does the media not report facts and base their articles on ground reality?

I myself had rented out a portion of upstairs to a Muslim. After having lived for two years and when I had to dispose of my house he refused to vacate though I had given him a three months notice. He asked me to go to court. Do you think I would recommend him to prospective house owners? It would be easy for a biased journalist to report, 'Poor 'X' nobody is prepared to take him as a tenant'. And one must read this aspart of the discrimination the Muslims by and large face in India.

'Poor Shabana Azmi a five times national awardee - if this is what happens toher then one can imagine what the ordinary Muslims go through' is the message. No country in the world treats its minorities as they aretreated in India - with respect and equality. It is grossly unfair forthe pseudo- secularists then to heap such unwarranted accusations.

Indian history records that the massacre perpetuated by the Muslims in Indiais unparallel, bigger than the holocaust of the Jews. If that was history then today we have the biggest number of terror victims in the world.

All religions profess that theirs is a religion of love and brotherhood. But this cannot remain as hollow proclamations by the religious leaders and so called secularists. It has to be experienced. It is in the name of religions that our country is not just a nation where "callousness rules' but where disharmony, distrustand disunity rules. Religious fundamentalist is shredding the fabric ofthe country. Any action has its reaction. You would agree with me that the criteria to etch the contours of a religion as fundamental are its dogmas, its tight control over its adherents and its intolerance ofother religions.

I believe that it is in love and goodness of heart that one will be judged not by the religion to which one belongs.

Kashmir: The Problem is Muslim Extremism

What is Kashmir? Is it a piece of orphan territory to be occupied by whosoever carries a gun? Or is it an integral part of an ancient country and the extension of a great culture?

Who are the people of Kashmir? Are they those who regard themselves as sons and daughters of that ancient country and as inheritors of that great culture? Or are they those who have been enslaved and brutalized and alienated from their ancestral society and culture by a terrorist and totalitarian cult?

To whom does Kashmir belong? Does it belong to the country and the culture which has suffered and survived brutal assaults by the terrorists and totalitarian cult? Or does it belong to the imperialist enclave which has been torn away by force from an organic whole and which is being used as a launching pad for further assaults on what has survived of the ancient country and the great culture?

These are the questions which should be posed and answered by all those who are concerned with what is called the Kashmir problem but what, in fact, is the problem presented by terrorist and totalitarian ideologies operating under religious cloaks. And it must be admitted that none of these questions can be answered except with the help of history.

It is my considered opinion that the so called Kashmir problem, we have been facing, since 1947 has never been viewed in a historical perspective. That is why it has defied solution so far, and its end is not in sight in the near future. Politicians at the helm of affairs during this nearly half a century have been living from hand to mouth and are waiting for Pakistan to face them with a fait accompli. Once againg they are out to hand over Kashmir and its people to be butchers who have devastated this fair land and destroyed its rich eulture. The name of the game is restoration of democracy.

Having watched the scene all these years, I feel that the secularist forces in India have never felt sure that Kashmir is an integral part of India like the rest of our states. It is only when someone else says that Kashmir does not belong to India that they make some half-hearted noises for fooling the people of India. This is the meaning of Article 370 and of propping up one Muslim leader after another in the valley in the fond hope that world events will some day solve the problem one way or the other.

It is therefore high time that we renounce this ritual and have a look at the problem in a historical perspective. I should like to warn that histories of Kashmir written by Kashmiri Hindus in modern times are worse than useless for this purpose. I have read almost all of them, only to be left wondering at the piteous state to which the Hindu mind in Kashmir has been reduced. I am not taking these histories into account except for bits and pieces which fall into the broad pattern.

What then is the history of Kashmir? It is the same as the history of the rest of India in its long drawn out encounter with Islam with a few notable differnces which I shall point out as I proceed.

Kashmir has been an integral part of Bharatvarsha which comprises the present day states of Afganistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh. What distinguished it in ancient times was not that it produced some kings who extended their political sway to neighbouring provinces of Bharatvarsha, but that for a long time it remained one of the foremost cradles of spirituality and culture created by Sanatan Dharma. The achievements of its sages and savants need not be recounted here. They are well known not only in India but also in far off lands extending towards the north and the east. The Chinese pilgrim, Hiuen Tsang, found the ancient Hindu culture flourishing in Kashmir only two decades before the armies of Islam arrived on the borders of Bharatvarsha.

Again, it goes to the credit of Kashmir that its kings supported the Turki and Hindu Shahiyas of Kabul and Zabul in repelling one invasion after another till the north-western gateway stood closed to Islamic inroads effectively and the Islamic imperialists at Damascus and Kufa were forced to seek another avenue of advance through Makran and Baluchistan.

Finally Kashmir not only threw back the Islamic army which advanced towards its borders from Sindh and Multan under Mohammed Bin Qasim (712-715 CE) but also forged an alliance with China which was facing the same menace in Central Asia. At the same time it fought tooth and nail with the Tibetans who were at that time in alliance with Islamic imperialism. Few Hindu kings in Bharatvasha are known to have matched the wisdom and vision of Chandrapida (713-724 CE) and his younger brother Lalitaditya Muktapida (724-760 CE).

The Hindu rulers of Kashmir cannot be blamed in particular for permitting some Islamic missionaries to settle down in the valley for creating seditious colonies of converts. That was a blindness shared in common by Hindu rulers all over Bharatvarsha throughout the centuries. None of them realized that the Sufis were sappers and miners for Islamic imperialism. What distinguishes the Hindu rulers of Kashmir from Hindu rulers elsewhere is that they continued to recruit in their army Turks from Central Asia without realizing that the Turks had become Islamicized and as such were no longer mere wage earners. One of Kashmir's Hindu rulers Harsha (1089-1101 CE) was persuaded by his Muslim favourites to plunder temple properties and melt down icons made of precious metal. Apologists of Islam have been highlighting this isolated incident in order to cover up the iconoclastic record of Islam not only in Kashmir but also in the rest of Bharatvarsha.
At the same time they conceal the fact that Kashmir passed under the heel of Islam not as a result of the labours of its missionaries but due to a coup staged by an Islamicised army.

What followed the coup is recorded in numerous histories written by some contemporary Hindus but mostly by Muslim chroniclers: the slaughter of Brahmins, the destruction of temples, forced conversion. The pattern was the same as in other parts of Bharatvarsha which had the misfortune of passing under the heel of Islam at one time or the other. The only distinguishing feature in the case of Kashmir has been that unlike elsewhere no Hindu resistance or rebellion could manage to surface anywhere in the valley subsequent to 1338 CE when that scheming Shah Mir became the first Muslim Sultan of Kashmir. Perhaps the odds were too overwhelming, or perhaps a psyche of surrender had been crystallizing over a pcriod of time. The latter seems to be the case if we consult the record of Kashmiri Hindus subsequent to that period.

What is the record? Starting with Jonaraja (15th century CE), the author of the second Rajatarangni, and coming down to Jawahar Lal Nehru (20th century CE) it is an endless saga of sycophancy and kowtowing on the part of Kashmiri Hindus before the aggressors. One has to read the songs which Jonaraja composed in praise of Zain-ul-Abedin and the panegyrics which Jawahar Lal Nehru has heaped on Mohammed Ghaznavi, Babar, Akbar and Sheikh Abdullah, his Sher-i-Kashmir. The record shows a progressive degeneration of the Hindu psyche vis-a-vis Muslim sultans. Jonaraja had the decency at least to detail the brutalities committed by the Islamic sultans. For Jawahar Lal Nehru that dark chapter in the history of Kashmir does not exist at all. In his fat volume, Glimpses of World History, he mentions the doings of Mihirgul in Kashmir in the 5th century CE and then jumps straight to the "sale of Kashmir" to Gulab Singh in 1846 CE. In the Discovery of India he has space only for spreading the canard in the context of Rinchin. It always comes to the Brahmins being blamed for every misfortune that has fallen to Hindu society and culture at any time in their hoary history.

Small wonder that balance of farces in Kashmir should have continued to tilt in favour of Islamic imperialism till the last Hindu has been hounded out of his ancestral homeland. Small wonder that the hoodlums strut around not only in the valley but in the capital city of Delhi with airs of injured innocence. Small wonder that the Marxist-Muslim combine of scribes who dominate the media blame Jagmohan for arranging an overnight and enmasse exodus of the Hindus from the valley. (They cannot forgive Jagmohan for bringing back Kashmir to India at a time when the combine was hoping that Pakistan would face India with an accomplished fact.) Small wonder that what Arun Shourie has aptly described as the "Formula Factory" - the Nayars, the Puris, the Kotharis, the Dhars, the Haksars, the Tarkundes - should be busy devising ways for handing over the Kashmir Hindus to their age-old oppressors.

The Kashmiri Hindus will be committing suicide if they walk into the trap and agree to return to a "democracy" presided over by the hoodlums. The only alternative left to them is to battle for their proper rights against the fanatics and their apologists. The battle has to be ideological under the circumstances and along the following lines:

1. That Kashmir was a great cradle of Hindu culture for a long time should be publicized in great detail;
-
2. That how this culture was ruthlessly destroyed by theocratic fanaticism should be made known in equally detailed manner;
-
3. That the Hindu population of Kashmir was forced to convert to Islam by brutal methods should be made known widely;
-
4. That the Sufis were no way behind other fanatics in their proselytising zeal to which they gave maximum effect under state patronage should be brought out clearly;
-
5. That the Rishi tradition of Yogic spirituality which went undergound and which survived for a long time and had nothing to do with Sufism should be made manifest.

The Islamic fundamentalism sweeping the world today is not a display of self confidence, rather it is its uneasy reaction to the emergence of a world culture based upon humanism, rationalism and universalism. Let the Hindus of Kashmir become more conscious of their own cultural heritage so that they become increasingly aware of the crimes committed on their land and their people. No other section of Hindu society is better qualified to give a lead in this context. Let there be no doubt that the lead will be followed by the rest of India.

Blame UPA’s Double Standards

Sir— This refers to the editorial, “Callous comment” (August 21 ). Before lecturing other political parties to rise above partisan politics, will the Prime Minister explain as to why the sanctioning of 97 acres of land to the Sri Amaranath Shrine Board was first approved and then cancelled? The people surely have the right know the reason behind this flip-flop. The double standards of the UPA Government are responsible for the present crisis in Jammu & Kashmir.

Secular? Must love SIMI!

Sir—Now that it has been established that the Students Islamic Movement of India and the Indian Mujahideen are one and the same, what do Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mr Ram Vilas Paswan have to say for themselves? Praising SIMI may fetch Muslim support for these self-serving politicians, but they will certainly lose out on votes from other sections of the society. Their shameless politics of appeasement and brazen support for SIMI is compromising national security.

Deoband's Bogus Fatwa on Terror

Many in the West and in other regions of the world were impressed by the issuing of a fatwa condemning terrorism by one of the leading religious centres in the Muslim world, the Darul-Uloom Deoband. An Islamic seminary said to have 'inspired' the Taliban has, according to the said document, denounced 'terrorism' as against Islam, calling it an "unpardonable sin".

Hoping for a major change in ideology, international counter-terrorism authorities and policy-makers have been asking experts to determine if the Deobandi declaration will help counter the calls for violent jihad by Al Qaeda and its ilk around the world. In the war of ideas with the jihadis, many Western architects of strategic communications look for any sign that hearts and minds may be changing course and sympathies. From Washington, DC to Brussels and beyond, bureaucrats tasked with exploring the Muslim world for new trends, shop around for what they call "counter-narrative against extremism".

The Deobandi school, a classical third branch of Salaafi Islamism (along with Wahaabism and Muslim Brotherhood), has significant weight in the South Asia theatre. Its teachings based on a strict interpretation of Islamic law have reached many countries, including Afghanistan and Britain, where they are said to have indoctrinated the Taliban.

"If they change course, Al Qaeda and the Taliban are finished," I heard in Europe and the United States. So the question now is, have they changed doctrinal direction and is this fatwa the evidence? I regretfully conclude that it is not the case yet.
-
Thousands of clerics and students from around India attended a meeting at the 150-year-old Deoband, and declared that they stand "against acts of terrorism". Maulana Marghoobur Rahman, the older rector of Deoband, told Reuters, "There is no place for terrorism in Islam. Terrorism, killing of the innocent is against Islam. It is a faith of love and peace, not violence." Rahman said it was unjust to equate Islam with terrorism, to see every Muslim as a suspect or for Governments to use this to harass innocent Muslims.

"There are so many examples of people from other communities being caught with bombs and weapons, why are they never convicted?" said Qazi Mohammed Usman, deputy head of Deoband. The meeting defined terrorism as any action targeting innocent people, both Muslim and non-Muslim, whether committed by an individual, an institution or a Government.
These statements could be seen as impressive when quoted by news agencies rushing to break the good news, but to the seasoned analysts of Salaafism, the solid doctrinal roots of jihadism were kept untouched. Here is why.

From the fatwa itself and the statements made as it was issued, the following political goals likely motivated the gathering and the fatwa.
-
Create a separation in the eyes of the public discourse between Islam (as a religion) and terrorism as an illegal violent activity.
-
Such a move is legitimate and to be encouraged as it diminishes the tensions towards Muslims in non-Muslim countries, particularly in the West, as some are claiming that the Islamic religion is theologically linked to the acts and statements of the jihadis. The logic of "we are Muslims and we are against terrorism" helps significantly the disassociation between the community and the acts of violence.

However, without criticising the ideological roots of this violence, the fatwa seems to state a wishful thinking, not an injunction. A more powerful fatwa should have openly and expressly said: "We reject the calls for violent jihad regardless of the motives." For the followers of jihadism do not consider their jihad as 'terrorism'. Their answer has always been - to these types of fatwas -- "but we aren't performing terrorism, we are conducting jihad". Thus, at this crucial level, the Deobandi fatwa missed the crux of the problem.

Deny Governments the ability to use the accusation that Islam condones terrorism to oppress Muslims.

The fatwa is concerned with geopolitics more than theological reform. Concern for the safety of one's co-religionists is of course legitimate and should be addressed. But jihad, the legitimising root of political violence, cannot be ignored in any effort to protect the lives of Muslims.
There is no evidence that modern day Governments have expressly linked religion to terrorism; quite the opposite. Almost all national leaders involved in the confrontation with jihadi forces since 9/11 have clearly made a clear distinction between religion and terrorism.

Some even went further by negating any link whatsoever between theological texts and jihadism, which of course is not accurate. For in the texts, there are passages used by the terrorists in their indoctrination. Hence, the Deobandi fatwa should have instead asked clearly the jihadis not to use these citations or else they would be considered as sinners.

But instead of using their religious prominence to remove the theological weapon from the hands of the jihadis, the Deobandi clerics are attempting to shield the jihadis from the actions of Governments by denying that these extremists are indeed using -- and abusing -- religion.

Some may argue that the fatwa's open goal is to defend Muslims from being unjustly targeted by non-Muslim Governments (a positive move) but a thorough analysis of the text used shows that the main intention of the declaration is to defend the Islamists from being contained by both Muslim and non-Muslim Governments.

In other words, by denying that jihadism is the root cause of many acts of terror in Europe, the US, Africa, the Greater West Asia and Asia, the Deobandi fatwa in fact is shielding the jihadis from the accusation of terrorism, thus protecting them.

The fatwa defined terrorism as violence "targeting innocent people". Such a definition is not new and doesn't set clear boundaries. For the question at hand is what does 'innocent' mean? On several Websites and on many shows on Al Jazeera television, jihad's apologists often use the Arabic term 'bare'e' for 'innocent' and assure the audience that jihad cannot target the latter.

The concept of 'innocent' isn't that innocent in jihadism. For the militant ideologues can render individuals and groups 'bare'e' or not 'bare'e' at their discretion. The status of 'innocence' doesn't overlap fully with the status of 'civilians'. Hence, to claim that terrorism is defined as targeting innocent people is to claim that not all civilians are innocent, and that not only breaches international law, but gives credence to jihadi violence.

Moreover, the fatwa doesn't identify Al Qaeda, or any other similar group, including the Taliban, as terrorist organisations. And as of now, no subsequent fatwas based on this Deobandi fatwa have done so yet. Therefore, in terms of identification of terror entities, the edict has failed to show its followers who is the terror perpetrator. This text simply doesn't bring novelty to the debate about jihadi-rooted terrorism.

If You Liked Fallujah, You'll Love " Palestine "

The image of charred American bodies hanging from an Iraqi bridge in Fallujah brings to mind a similar atrocity several years ago in Palestinian Ramallah. There, an unspeakably barbarous mob tortured, disemboweled and gouged out the eyes of two defenseless Israelis who had gotten lost on the roads. There, as on March 31 in Fallujah, "ordinary" Arab populations - many of them undeniably ecstatic with blood lust - crossed every boundary of civilized human behavior. In Ramallah literally thousands of Palestinians, including women and young children, danced with jubilation near the torn corpses of Vadim Norjitz and Yossi Avrahami. On the next morning, virtually every mosque in the Arab/Islamic world listened with open delight as its inspired clergy heap fevered praise upon the murderers.

The latest Iraqi atrocities against American civilians stem from the same cultural mindset as Palestinian atrocities against Israelis. Moreover, Iraqi suicide bombers have learned a great deal from their Palestinian brothers. Witnessing that Palestinian crimes against humanity have led both Israel and the United States to move fearfully toward accepting the creation of a Palestinian state, certain Iraqis can now conclude quite rationally that mutilating Americans is far more than a convenient way to let off steam. It is also a manifestly purposeful way to end the U.S. "occupation" and to reinstall a genocidal regime.

As the events in Fallujah essentially reproduced those in Ramallah, so - too - would a state of " Palestine " quickly resemble and export the chaotic conditions of present-day Iraq . Leaving aside the many, many valid reasons why a Palestinian state is unwarranted according to international law, creation of such an additional Arab/Islamic country today would undoubtedly enlarge existential risks to Israel and would clearly provide yet another secure base for suicide-bombing terrorism in the region. Moreover, as a fully sovereign state unencumbered by any outside military forces, its predictable preparations for new spasms of war and terror would proceed with utterly no constraint or inhibition. In time, " Palestine " would surely become the launching point for direct WMD attacks upon neighboring Israel and, indirectly, for WMD terror against certain parts of Europe and the United States .

We know from the history of this long-bloodied planet that there are both crimes of passion and crimes of logic, but the two need not always be mutually exclusive. If a Palestinian state is soon to be carved out of the still-living body of Israel , Arab/Islamic terrorists and murderers will recognize immediately that atrocity may also yield significant political victory. Combining De Sade with Clausewitz, PLO and Hamas and their Palestinian sister organizations will assuredly begin to fashion an entire country animated by the savage sentiments of Fallujah and Ramallah.

Not surprisingly, the phrases "Death to Israel " and "Death to America " are always screamed in chorus. A hater of the sort found in Fallujah and Rammalah is always attached to a howling mob. In such overwhelmingly passionate hatreds, one simply cannot be alone. With particular reference to Israel and the United States , a newly formed Palestinian state would rapidly become the murderous lynch mob in macrocosm, the collective hater writ large. Driven to "liberate" the "Zionist Entity" and to inflict suffering upon American citizens in their towns and cities, leaders of Palestine would never settle for anything less than the specific behavior called for by the Islamic Resistance Movement against "unbelievers." The frenzied bacchanal of Fallujah and Ramallah must be understood, at least in part, as a form of religious sacrifice. Both incidents exhibit indisputable elements of the classical sacrificial rite. A principal function of sacrifice is always to restore harmony to the primitive community and to strengthen a disintegrating social fabric. The fiendish killers in Fallujah and Ramallah had stumbled upon vulnerable surrogates for their own overflowing private and collective hatreds. A state of Palestine would seek and find comparable surrogates in Israel and America . Indeed, Israel in its entirety would immediately be identified by the new Arab state as the altogether perfect object of sacrifice.

Everywhere in the Arab/Islamic world, the post-Holocaust concentration of Jews in Israel is taken as decisive proof of Allah's plan for another Jewish genocide. Ironically, for this world, the state created to prevent a second Holocaust has been allowed only to make further Jewish annihilation distinctly practicable. Religiously, any sort of peace with Israel is still described by both Hamas and the Palestinian National Authority as "nothing less than a poison threatening the lifeblood of Islam." A new state of Palestine , bent upon sacrificing its collective enemy of "Jews and Crusaders," would like nothing better than to transform all of Israel into Fallujah and Ramallah and also to allow its protected territory to be used for terrorist preparations against the American "Great Satan."

Here is what Dr. Ahmad Abu Halabiya, member of the Palestine Authority, preached recently on official PA television: "Have no mercy on the Jews, no matter where they are, in any country. Fight them, wherever you are. Wherever you meet them, kill them... torture them with your hands....Wherever you are, kill those Jews and those Americans who are like them."
